Proposals for Faculty Positions

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals for these faculty positions that fulfill criteria for participation in teaching, research, and scholarship, with personal goals & objectives. All applicants will be expected to provide student and administrative services outlined above.

Teaching

Faculty members are expected to carry significant teaching responsibilities for key courses in the curriculum, consistent with experience, rank, and leadership goals. In general, the ability to teach two didactic courses each term, or a combination of didactic and clinical courses, with demonstrated excellence, is required.

The AOM curriculum is traditionally taught using extensive lecture and memorization. For our younger, more academically adept students, who are accustomed to more active, and interactive learning styles, adaptations to our traditional methods are necessary. Leadership in teaching encompasses strategies to raise the level of academic rigor in the curriculum, to create innovative teaching materials that assist active learning, and to make use of educational technologies such as hybrid learning.  Faculty leaders who are able to learn methods of program assessment and help other teachers as well will be very helpful. Changes in medical education involving evidence-based medicine (EBM) define learning experiences that are strongly focused in clinical experiences. Teaching that incorporates standards of evidence-based medicine, such as problem- or case-based learning and evaluation of research articles, is highly desirable. Teaching that helps prepare acupuncturists to work in IM settings as part of a primary care team is highly desirable. Subject expertise in acupuncture that is highly accomplished, nationally recognized or distinguished, and that helps promote scholarship in AOM, is highly desirable.

Research

Promotion of research is a fundamental part of NESA's mission, requiring support of all faculty and staff, and is not isolated in the Research Department. Leadership in acupuncture research depends on the contributions of clinicians and scholars of AOM. NESA faculty will greatly benefit from faculty development efforts to create a pool of knowledgeable teachers/practitioners who can participate in hypothesis generation, literature review, and clinical research on acupuncture mechanism and efficacy. Research knowledge needs to be summarized, synthesized, and integrated into the AOM curriculum so that graduates of NESA will be able to speak and write knowledgably about acupuncture from the biomedical perspective.

Evidence of scholarship may be demonstrated by:

  • Contributions to research proposals
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Contributions to scholarly books
  • Participation in clinical research
  • Presentation of papers at professional meetings
  • Supervised research by students leading to publications or presentations at professional conferences

Scholarship in AOM

NESA faculty should expect to make significant contributions to AOM scholarship through clinical practice and teaching of subject expertise in acupuncture. Publication in peer-reviewed journals as a form of communication with colleagues is strongly encouraged.
