NESA is excited to announce that Jeffrey Yuen, the world-renowned educator in Traditional Chinese Medicine, will be teaching "Understanding Western Pharmaceuticals/Drugs from a Chinese Medicine Perspective" on April 3-4, 2010.

In Chinese medical practices, it is common to encounter patients who are also undergoing Western medical treatments which involve the use of pharmaceuticals/drugs.  Obviously, there are many concerns regarding interactions and possibly contraindications between these drugs and Chinese herbs.  It's common for clinicians to assume that although these drugs and Chinese herbs are similar in therapeutic actions, they can warrant serious moderation and monitoring (e.g., anticoagulants with herbs that invigorate blood). However, it is more important to also recognize the energetics of these drugs and how they can be understood within the framework of Chinese medicine.

This workshop will examine the different categories of common drugs utilized in Western medicine and how these pharmaceuticals can be integrated within Chinese medicine.  By exploring the energetics of these drugs from a Chinese medical perspective, we can assess their implications and ramifications.

Jeffrey Yuen comes from a Daoist lineage and is an ordained priest of two traditions of Daoism, the Jade Purity and Complete Reality schools. Jeffrey has served as Dean of Academic Affairs of the Acupuncture Program at the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences, is President of the International Tai Chi Institute, and a faculty member at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York.  He apprenticed for more than 20 years in Classical Chinese Medicine and other Taoist healing arts with Master Taoist Priest and Physician, Yu Wen.  Jeffrey was the first recipient of the Educator of the Year Award conferred by the AAAOM. He lectures frequently nationally and abroad. Recently, a post-graduate center for Chinese medicine was created in Dublin, Ireland devoted to his teachings of Classical Chinese Medicine.
